Friday 24 December 2010 RUSSIA - The authorities have reversed an earlier decision to ban the sale of frozen chicken, which was to have come into force on 1 January.
Russia's consumer rights watchdog will allow frozen chicken meat imports from the start of the year, after thinking again on the issue, its head Gennady Onishchenko said yesterday, 23 December.

Deputy Prime Minister Victor Zubkov has announced that Russia is to significantly cut its poultry import quota next year, to 350,000 metric tonnes. This is 50% less than this year and about 40% less than originally planned.

Russia, a major importer of poultry could become self-sufficient in three years, which is within the 2013 target set by the government to reach this goal. Russia, which has been developing domestic pig and poultry breeding to cut its dependency on imports worth hundreds of millions of dollars, has said it should stop poultry imports in three years. "As far as poultry meat is concerned, the target (of reaching self-sufficiency) may be achieved even earlier (than 2012-2013)," Sergei Mikhailov, the CEO of Russian meat producer, Cherkizovo told the Reuters Russia Summit.

ODINTSOVO, Moscow Region — Italian firm Cremonini Group on Tuesday opened a meat plant that will produce up to 80,000 hamburger patties an hour for McDonald's restaurants using domestically produced beef — a formula praised by authorities who are pushing for more locally made food products. The opening comes after President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday approved a new food security doctrine, which aims at increasing the share of domestically produced food on the market to more than 80 percent over the next decade.
